Reliquary of the Weeping Virgin at Xagħra Parish Church

The reliquary of the Weeping Madonna venerated at the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Tears, Syracuse, Sicily, was housed in the parish church of Xagħra from Palm Sunday until the following Tuesday.

The reliquary also visited the parish of Xagħra on two other occasions – at the turn of the millennium and on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the consecration of the parish church.

The reliquary attracted many faithful to the basilica where they prayed in silence or in groups. The rector of the Sanctuary, Don Raffaele Aprile, brought the reliquary to several homes for the elderly.

On April 12, the reliquary was carried in procession alongside the statue of the Crucifixion by the famous artist Luigi Guacci from Lecce.

Leading the procession were Don Raffaele, Archpriest of Xagħra Carmelo Refalo and Archpriest of Żejtun Nicholas Pace.

Members of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Consolation (Taċ-Ċintura) from the Żejtun and Xagħra brotherhoods also participated.

The reliquary consists of an urn which contains the vial in which the now crystallized tears are kept, which have undergone chemical analysis.

The reliquary is the heart of the Syracuse sanctuary as it contains the indisputable proof of the event – Mary’s tears.
